Blood is drawn from our body for diagnostic purposes by trained professionals called phlebotomists. They extract blood by using techniques like venipuncture and capillary puncture. It is the duty of a phlebotomy technician to make sure that the needle used for taking blood is sterile. They thoroughly clean the needles before using and they dispose of the needles after use. They are responsible for sorting the blood samples in the laboratory. This should be done with utmost care as a mishap here can result in a threat to the patient’s life.
Good interactive skills and patience is required for performing the job of a phlebotomist. They will have to deal with patients who are not willing to cooperate with phlebotomy procedures. Even though the skills required in this field is minimal, most of the clinics and hospitals are hiring certified phlebotomy technician. This is done so as to make sure that the technicians are well aware of the procedures and safety standards in the industry. Certified technicians are also paid higher wages than noncertified phlebotomists.
